According to the Puranas, the Ekadashi Vrat began when a divine energy emerged from Lord Vishnu to destroy the demon Mura. Pleased with her, Lord Vishnu blessed her as Ekadashi and declared that anyone who observes a fast on this day—which falls on the eleventh lunar day of the waxing and waning moon—would have all their wishes fulfilled and their sins forgiven.
