What is the difference between agarbatti and dhoop?

Agarbatti is incense rolled onto a thin bamboo stick and lit at the tip. Dhoop is bamboo-free — a cone, stick or loose resin burnt directly or on charcoal, giving thicker smoke and a stronger aroma. Agarbatti suits daily aarti; dhoop is used for deeper purification and longer pujas.

Which incense should I use for meditation?

How long does one incense stick burn?

A standard agarbatti burns for roughly 30 to 45 minutes depending on thickness and airflow. Keep it away from direct fan or window draught — a steady, slow burn gives a cleaner fragrance and less smoke.

Where should agarbatti be placed during puja?

Place the agarbatti stand to the right of the deity, and circle the lit stick three or seven times before the idol during dhoop aarti before setting it down. Never stick agarbatti into rice, fruit or directly into the mandir shelf — always use a proper holder to catch the ash.

How should incense sticks be stored?

Keep them in a closed box or zip pouch, away from sunlight, heat and damp. Stored well, agarbatti holds its fragrance for a year or more; left open in a humid room, it fades within weeks. Store different fragrances separately so they do not blend.

Is incense smoke safe to use indoors every day?

Burn one stick at a time in a room with some ventilation — a window or door partly open is enough. Natural, resin-based agarbatti produces far less irritating smoke than chemical-dipped sticks, which is the main reason to buy quality incense for daily use.
